Monthly Supplier Feature – Laneberg Wine

The Winery by Laneberg Wine

So, with English Wine week upon us we could not think of a better producer to feature this month than Laneberg Wine. Our very first Tyneside urban winery. For those of you who are familiar with the Heather and Bale mission, you will know that we seek out and celebrate fantastic and talented producers from the North East. So, when we discovered that we have a first of its kind, urban winery producing award-winning wine right here in the North East of England, we knew we had found something very special.

The Winery by Laneberg Wines is located on the Team Valley in Gateshead. It is owned and run by their head winemaker Elise Lane. Elise grew up in Newcastle before going on to study chemistry at Oxford University. Applying her knowledge of chemistry to the art of winemaking, the winery produced their first vintage in 2018. This wine quickly gained recognition from industry experts with the Bacchus, Solaris and crush Rose going on to win multiple awards.

Where it all began

While studying at Oxford university Elise went along to a “chemistry of wine making” evening. The evening explored everything from the smell, taste, and chemical components of different wines. Understanding how to identify these components in the overall bouquet of each wine. This evening sparked a real interest with Elise and of course, the chemist in her. She then went on to gain qualifications in wine tasting whilst working in corporate finance. After the birth of her first son, she left the world of finance and went on to study for a graduate diploma in viticulture and oenology at Plumpton College in Sussex. She then went on to work as an assistant winemaker in their commercial winery. This study along with the support and guidance from the head winemaker, helped Elise began to believe that she could open her own winery.

She had always been inspired by urban wineries. Having seen and learned about these wineries in London, New York, and Australia. The idea of buying in the finest grapes from anywhere she chooses and the versatility it creates in wine making, made this an exciting possibility. So, luckily for us she decided to take the leap and create the opportunity. Whilst pregnant with their second child in 2017 Elise and her husband moved their family back to the North East. From there, Elise began the journey of The Winery by Laneberg Wines.

You can read more about the journey in Elise’s own words in this Living North feature.

Bacchus 2018

When we introduced Laneberg wine into our range of Luxury Hampers, we started with their award-winning Bacchus 2018. It is described as the prized grape for producing still wine in England. So, if you appreciate a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, then this is the perfect choice for you!

The Bacchus is bursting with an aroma of elderflower, and flavours of peach and green apple. It is dry and complex with fruity notes and a lovely zesty length.

Where do we feature this producer?

We have only just begun with Laneberg Wines! We are really looking forward to adding more of their fabulous wines to our range of locally inspired hampers and gifts. For now you can find the Bacchus 2018 in our Hartley Picnic Basket. It is joined by all you need for the perfect picnic for two. Delicious Northumberland Cheese, Fantastic pate and preserves and of course a little chocolate by the very talented North Chocolate.

You can explore our range of English Wine Hampers and Gifts to see what other fantastic English wine makers we are working with.
